Barbara Agnes Vansciver

October 12, 1940 — December 2, 2021

Barbara Agnes VanSciver, 81, of Georgetown, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 2, 2021. She was born to the late Roger T. and Agnes M. (Ballas) Payne on October 12, 1940, in Easton, MD. Barbara lived in Federalsburg before eventually graduating from Harrington High School and then moving to Georgetown, Delaware. As a lifetime resident of Georgetown, Barbara’s deep love for her community was evident through her life’s work at the American Red Cross, serving the Sussex County community and all Delawareans in times of crisis and preparedness. During her work there, she was recognized many times for meritorious service and once received the highest national recognition, the Tiffany Award, for saving someone’s life who was choking in a restaurant. She also volunteered at Georgetown Aid in various community programs. Barbara was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. She enjoyed the weekly sharing group, weekly Bible studies, and attending the Henderson Sunday School class every Sunday. She loved to quilt with her group called “Prayer, Share, and Sew Forth”. She helped feed hundreds of people through Café of Hope Soup Kitchen, donations of bread to The Brown Bag Lunch Program, and the Lenten Luncheon Service. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her great grandmother, Ida C. Smith, who raised her; her son, Benjamin Malcolm VanSciver; and her granddaughter, Bethany M. VanSciver. She leaves behind her loving family, including her son, Daniel L. VanSciver and wife, Beth; her son, Jon K. VanSciver and wife, Cathy; her daughter-in-law, Laurie VanSciver-Lankford; her four grandchildren, Benjamin Malcolm VanSciver II, Morgan Elisabeth VanSciver, A. Mackenzie VanSciver, and Shelby Lynn VanSciver; as well as two great grandchildren, Benjamin Malcolm VanSciver III and Olivia M. VanSciver. She also leaves behind her siblings including her brother, Bill Payne and wife, Ellie; her brother, Mike Payne and wife, Sheila; her sister, Becky Henry and husband, Terry. Memorial services will take place on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 102 E. Laurel St., Georgetown, DE. At 10:00 a.m., a time of visitation will begin. Interment will be held at Union Cemetery for family only. Flowers are accepted, but donations are preferred in lieu of flowers to the Wesley United Methodist Church Food Programs in Georgetown.
