Bessie Ann Butler, 81 Milford, DE

Bessie Ann Butler passed away peacefully in her home on February 26, 2023, at the age of 81. Bessie was born in Goldsboro, MD. On January 25, 1942, daughter of Herman Short and Ruthanna Biles and Stepfather William “Pop” Short.

Bessie worked as a C.N.A. with Christiana Care VNA for 29 years, retiring in October 2019. Bessie loved her job and clients, making many good friends throughout her career. She was also a member of South Bowers Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and with a total of 39 years of service, she was considered a lifetime member. During her 39 years she served as a Director on the board for several years and was named South Bowers Ladies Auxiliary Member of the Year in 2018. Bessie loved attending church every Sunday where she was a member at Sardis United Methodist church. In her spare time, she loved gardening, being outdoors with many trips to the “dog pen” and anytime she got spend with her beloved family.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert “Pete” Butler, 3 Brothers, Johnny Short, Matthew Short, and Herman “Junior” Short.

Bessie is survived by her Son, Sam Butler (Beckey), Daughter Betty Schurman (Skip), Grandson, Brett Butler (Amanda), Granddaughter, Heather Strickland (Tyler), Great Grandson, Gauge Butler and 2 Great Grandchildren on the way. A beloved sister, Evelyn Hackman. A very dear life-long friend, Phyllis French and her beloved dog, Linda, along with many other family members, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023, with visitation from 11am-1pm at Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 N.W. Front Street, Milford, DE, with funeral service being held at 1pm. Interment will be at the Milford Community Cemetery, Milford, DE. A celebration of life will be held immediately after at South Bowers Fire Hall, 57 Scotts Corner Road, Milford, DE.
