Rev. Bruce Carl Thompson, 69, of Felton, formerly of Severna Park, MD, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at Bayhealth Kent General in Dover, DE.
Bruce was born on June 19, 1953 in Tacoma Park, MD, to the late William Carl and Mildred Doris (Kemp) Thompson. He married his wife Cheryl on March 22, 1974.
Bruce was an ordained minister in the Baltimore-Washington Conference United Methodist Church. He went to college at Western Maryland College, and earned his master of divinity at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in 1980. He pastored at Lanham UMC, and most recently Pasadena UMC.
Although his formal ministry ended upon his retirement, his love for God and community remained a central theme of his life. This began in high school, when he volunteered as a junior fireman, and continued on after retiring as he served his community as a hospice chaplain. He also began a career as an avionics technician for Dassault Falcon after completing his studies at Pittsburgh Institute of Aviation.
Outside of work, Bruce enjoyed spending time camping, sailing, and woodworking. He loved to tinker with computers and technology, and figuring out ways to improve his and Cheryl’s home through DIY projects. He was a fan of sci-fi and superhero movies, as well as watching Formula 1 races. He was a godly man, and an outstanding husband, father, and beloved “Gramps”.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 48 years, Cheryl McCardell Thompson; his daughter, Sarah Newberry and her husband Adam; his son, Joshua Thompson; his sister, Bonnie Bell; his brother, Scott Thompson and his wife Amy; and his two grandsons, Christian and Luke.
Memorial services will be held at a later date to be determined. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages that a donation be made in Bruce’s honor to your local church. Arrangements are in the care of Berry-Short Funeral Home of Felton, Delaware.
