Charles Joseph Helmer, “Charlie” passed away April 17, 2023, after a 15-year courageous battle with prostate cancer. Charlie was known by many to be full of life, always smiling, fun to be around and a people person. Most recently, he was a realtor in the Rehoboth Beach office of Jack Lingo Realtor and a captain/owner of Tranquila Sport Fishing in Lewes, Delaware. Prior, he was an entrepreneur with business interests in real estate and restaurants. Many know Charlie from his Arena days in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Charlie loved sports, fishing and traveling to the Florida Keys and Guatemala. He was a kind soul, always willing to talk to people and help anyone in need. It is with great sadness that we lose him from our community as he was a beacon always shining bright. As a good friend, Jody, stated so well…fair winds and following seas, may the marlin always be busting bait off your bow. All good memories stay in our hearts. We are going to miss you. Rest in peace, Charlie Helmer.
Charlie was born on March 9, 1964, in Hackensack, New Jersey to Theresa Marie Helmer of Selbyville and the late Charles Robert Helmer. He later moved to Maryland where he graduated from Fallston High School, Harford Community College, and Towson State University.
In addition to his mother, Charlie is survived by the love of his life, Leann Owen; his sister, Susan Poole (Steve) of Churchville, Maryland; his brother, John Helmer (Laura Sprague) of Bel Air, Maryland; two aunts, Linda Kramer and Nancy Wisneski; nieces and nephew Emileigh, Tessa, and Grace Anderson, Devin Owen and Braden Owen; cousins, Russ Kramer, Tammy Buss, Michael and Nancy Lee Esposito; Rich and Pat Owen and their son Rich Owen, Jr.
A special thank you is extended to Charlie’s care team and doctors at Johns Hopkins; especially Diane Reyes-Dagher, CRNP and Ken Pienta, MD. Charlie considered you family after so many years of care and was most appreciative of the care and quality of life maintained.
The family would also like to acknowledge and extend appreciation for the love, support and prayers shown by many through his final days and during this period of bereavement. The community of acquaintances, friends and family has overwhelmed family with love and support for which we will be eternally grateful. A private family service is planned. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Services in Milton, Delaware. Online condolences are welcome for the family at shortfuneralservicesandcremation.com.
