Montgomery Village, MD - Fay Carrico Keranen died suddenly and unexpectedly on August 3, 2021, from a brain aneurysm. Born May 15, 1935, in Washington DC she met the love of her life shortly after finishing Washington Lee High School. The day after Edmund H. Keranen graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1955, the two were married. She soon became ‘Mom’ to 4 children and devoted herself to raising their family. Before her youngest had even flown the coop, Fay ambitiously enrolled in college herself and ultimately earned a bachelor’s in nursing. Although she then embarked on a second career as an RN, perhaps an even more impressive undertaking was the 10 years she participated in a Women’s Health Initiative sponsored by the National Institute of Health. Her consistent motivation throughout life was to help others and to leave the world a better place for future generations. Fay was a devout Catholic and her faith always guided her. Despite her husband’s death late in 2019, she remained optimistic and forward thinking. Even so, her concern for the public’s safety and health was paramount. Given the continued threat of COVID-19, there will be no public service at this time. Instead, the family asks that you celebrate Fay’s life daily, led by her example of kindness and humility. If you are moved to contribute in her memory, the family suggests either a blood donation or a gift to S.O.M.E. www.some.org Fay’s surviving siblings, Ann Axtell, Ginger Steger (John), and Thomas Joseph Carrico (Ellen), and her sister-in-law, Elaine Eckert, will continue to hold Fay close to their hearts in prayer. Fay’s siblings will always cherish the good times they shared together, as will her countless friends from St. Charles grade school, DPG sorority sisters, W-L high school, many military friends, MC nursing school, WHI, Montgomery Village, and Ocala Palms. She enjoyed them all and was a faithful friend. Fay and Ed’s children, Teresa Hughes (Gene) of Germantown, MD, Daniel Keranen of Iowa City, IA, Kyle Keranen of Williamsburg, VA, and Michelle Heck (Bruce) of Ellicott City, MD; and their 10 grandchildren, survive to carry on the Keranen legacy, emulating as best they can the example set of living each day with kindness of spirit, generosity of heart, and compassion and love for all.
