Herbert Wilson Gabel

Herbert W. Gabel, Jr. age 92, passed away on September 30, 2023 at Bayhealth Sussex Campus, Milford, DE. He was born on August 4, 1931 in West Chester, Pennsylvania to Herbert W. Gabel, Sr. and Emma Bott Gabel.

Herbert was a member of the American Legion Post 28 and served in the United States Army from 1952-1954. He retired from Delaware Technical Community College as a groundskeeper. He helped open a home for handicapped children in upstate New York in 1967 along with his wife. He was an assistant coach for his son’s football team and helped build the football field at Delaware Technical and Community College. He was also a member of the Garden Club. He loved all sports and was an avid racecar fan, attending local dirt tracks and watching NASCAR races. He loved watching his grandchildren in all their various sports and music activities. He was a loving father and loved his family and was so very proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his parents; daughter, Kimberly Esham; sister, Helen Beiber and brother, Richard Gabel.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth E. Gabel of 70 years and children, Greg Gabel (Nancy), Donald Gabel (Dora), and Kathy Scott (Leon), son in law Bruce Esham (Linda) grandchild Christopher Gabel (Amber), Mathew Esham (Crystal), Samantha Stafford (Matthew), Liana Gabel, Anthony Gabel (Kristi), one sister, Shirley Supplee, 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Saturday October 14, 2023 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Peninsula Community Church, 28574 Cypress Road, Selbyville, DE 19975. A Celebration of Life will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private.
