Irvin Lee Betts

April 27, 1940 — January 9, 2024

Irvin Lee Betts (83) passed away on January 9, 2024, after a very sudden decline in his health. He was ushered to heaven with his family lovingly by his side.

Born April 27, 1940, to Bessie Bell (Issacs) Betts and Clarence Betts, Irvin lived his rambunctious young life in Georgetown, Delaware with his five siblings along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends nearby.

He attended Georgetown High School and graduated in 1958. Irvin went on to become a master of masonry, spending more than 50 years working in the trade. Many knew of Irvin’s talents laying brick and stone and his work can be seen at several local businesses and private residences. In fact, Irvin laid all of the bricks for his very first home in 1978. He passed on his knowledge to his sons Wells and Michael and spent many afternoons working outside with them as they grew up.

Irvin was also a great bowler and enjoyed spending time at Millsboro Lanes with his teammates several days a week. He took a liking to the sport when he was 16 years old and even took home a championship amateur bowling title in 2003 along with a $50,000 prize. For Irvin, bowling was a great way to connect with his family and friends and just enjoy life.

He loved classic cars and took many trips to the local Dairy Queen to show off his 1955 Chevy Belaire on cruise-in nights. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren can attest to his ability to tickle like no other, and surely remember his love for a cold Pepsi which was always accompanied by an “ahh baby” after the first sip.

Irvin is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Nancy Betts, his youngest brother Kenny Betts, and his four children Wells Betts, Michael Betts, Lisa Albright, and Terri Clausen. Irvin also leaves behind eight adoring grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren along with many loyal friends and extended family members.

Irvin is predeceased by his mother and father, his first wife Martha Rose Evans, his brothers Elwood and William Betts, sisters Betty VanAuken and Doris Dorman, and granddaughter Crystal Betts.

Family and friends are welcome to attend the viewing at Short Funeral Services in 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, DE 19947 on Tuesday, January 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the funeral will taking place from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Graveside service will immediately follow.
