John A. Hopkins, Jr., 75
HARBESON – John A. Hopkins, Jr., passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 20, 2023.
John was born in Lewes, DE son of the late John A. Sr., and Elizabeth “Lib” (Calhoun) Hopkins. He was born into a farming family, and he continued those family traditions throughout his life. Along with his family, John was owner and operator of Hopkins Granary, Inc. in Milton. The Granary operated for 55 years at which time John retired in May 2003.
John served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War and was stationed at Dover Air Force Base. He loved to travel and was an avid camper. He enjoyed mining for gold, coin collecting and black powder target shooting.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his wife, Laura (Joseph) Hopkins, and a brother-in-law, Dr. Richard B. Crabb.
He is survived by his son, John A. Hopkins, III and wife Dawn; a daughter, Donna Hopkins Gooner; a sister, Patricia H. Crabb; four grandchildren, Justin Hopkins (Alison), Izaak Hopkins, RJ Gooner and Skye Gooner; and four great granddaughters; as well as extended family and many friends in the farming community.
A visitation will be held from 11:00am-1:00pm on Friday, April 28, 2023 in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal Street, Milton, Delaware. A funeral service will begin at 1:00pm with burial to immediately follow at Coolspring Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Harbeson.
