The Slaughter Family is sad to announce the passing of Leon V. Slaughter. He passed away on August 7, 2024, at the age of 92.
Leon is survived by his sons, Donald L. Slaughter and his wife Gail of Milton, DE and Robert L. Slaughter and his wife Theresa of Bonita Springs, FL, a grandson, Mickey Slaughter, and his wife, Jamie, of Harrington, DE and a great-grandson, Loghan Slaughter, of Harrington, DE. He is also survived by a sister, Bernice Wilson, and her husband Kenneth, of Bridgeville, DE and many nieces and nephews.
Leon was predeceased by his loving wife of 70 years, Lorraine V. Slaughter in April of 2023 and his parents, Virgil Slaughter in 1983 and Pauline Slaughter (nee Larrimore) in 1982. He is also predeceased by his brother, David Slaughter, and his sisters, Eleanor Bradley, and June Dykstra.
Leon was born in Harrington, DE on October 19, 1931. He graduated from Milford High School in 1951. Leon was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from June 1954-1956 as a tank driver in the 3rd Cavalry. After his discharge, he worked for Milford Motors in Milford, DE. He then worked for Wright’s Auto Supply for 5 years and Synder’s Auto Supply for 13 years. Leon worked for Manlove Auto Parts for the last 18 years of his career, before retiring in 1994.
Leon loved traveling to Florida, going on cruises, camping, and boating. Leon and Lorraine really enjoyed the summer months. They loved sitting around their pool, soaking up the sun, planning their next cruise. Leon’s passion was watching NASCAR races on TV and attending NASCAR races at various tracks. He was an avid FORD fan, and his favorite driver was David Pearson. In his later years, Leon could be seen at McDonald’s, Hardees, and a variety of other restaurants around Milford and Harrington, sitting with his friends, talking about current events, and what was happening around the Milford area. Leon grew up on a farm in the Cedar Neck area of Milford and was a farm boy at heart. He was a frequent visitor to the Shockley farms where he would occasionally be seen driving their John Deere tractors in the fields. Leon was also a founding member of the Lincoln Cornerstone Church, Lincoln, DE.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, August 15, 2024, in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 NW Front Street, Milford, Del 19963, where a time of visitation for family and friends will being at 10:00am. A graveside service at the Milford Community Cemetery will immediately follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Lincoln Cornerstone Church, 10622 N. Union Church Rd., Lincoln, DE 19960.
