Georgetown—Martha Torbert Hudson, 96
Martha T. Hudson, age 96, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2022 while holding her son’s hand.
Born in Georgetown, Delaware on May 3, 1926, Martha was the daughter of the late “Ray” and Mary Torbert. She graduated from Georgetown High School in 1944; subsequently working at Fort Miles in Lewes, DE. She loved talking about the capture of a German U-boat off the Delaware coast while she was at Fort Miles and watching German sailors being marched on shore as POWs, as well as the excitement of her subsequent tour of the U-boat. After the war, she was employed part-time in various positions by the Farmers Bank of the State of Delaware in the Georgetown, DE branch well into the 1980s.
Martha’s interests were varied. She enjoyed family and local history; spending much time on her family genealogy and co-authoring the book “From Crossroads to County Seat.” She and her husband were very active in the formative years of the Georgetown Historical Society; especially in Society activities celebrating Georgetown’s bicentennial. She also enjoyed various crafts; such as creating her many egg shell Christmas ornaments. Travel with her husband was another favorite pastime, varying from weekend trips to cross-country excursions. Their most memorable trip was a tour of the United Kingdom; including a visit to Stonehenge. Without question, however, her greatest pride and joy was her family!
Martha lived a long and active life; filled with love and joy. She will be greatly missed by her family and all that knew her.
In addition to her parents, Martha was predeceased in death by her husband (Freeman W. Hudson) and a son (Kevin T. Hudson). She is survived by another son (F. Gregory Hudson, Charlotte, NC), her daughter-in-law (Sheila W. Hudson, Ambler, PA) and her granddaughter (Sierra W. Hudson, Ambler, PA).
Her funeral service will be held on Friday, January 6, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Short Funeral Services (Georgetown Chapel), 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, DE. Interment will follow at the Union Cemetery, Adams and Race Streets, Georgetown, DE. Online condolences may be sent to shortfuneralservicesandcremation.com.
