Myrl D. Powell

MILTON – Myrl D. Powell, age 91, of Milton, passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2021. He was born in Burr Oak, Kansas, son of the late Louie and Avis (Fishburne) Powell. Myrl graduated from Kansas State University in 1951, and also attended the U.S Army Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. Fluent in German and Russian, Myrl served in the Army from 1952 – 1955 where he was stationed in Kulm, Germany, near the border between East and West Germany. Myrl worked at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC for 30 years retiring in 1985. Myrl loved the beach and spent as much time as possible at the family beach house in South Bethany since the family purchased the property in 1965. Myrl loved playing a variety of musical instruments; especially the harpsichord and recorder, enjoyed the outdoors, reading, and cooking. Myrl was active musically in the Cape region and often performed locally at churches and senior centers. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Josephine (Emanuele) Powell; his son Michael, and daughter-in-law Jerri. Myrl was buried in a private family ceremony at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
