Sara Virginia Lyons

GEORGETOWN – Sara Virginia Lyons passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. She was 88.

Mrs. Lyons was born in Frederica, Delaware on September 6, 1935, the first-born child of Willard Isaac Stayton and Sara Virginia (Grant) Stayton of Milford. The cause of her death was congestive heart failure.

Virginia attended Milford Public Schools. She is preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Norman Willard Lyons, her parents and her oldest brother, Willard Stayton, Junior. Mr. and Mrs. Lyons owned and operated Georgetown Dry Cleaners on Race Street for 18 years. They attended the Church of God in Georgetown and Christ Evangelistic Church of Laurel, DE.

Mrs. Lyons was a kind, cheerful, industrious lady who exemplified self-sacrificial love. She collected all sorts of figurines and enjoyed spending time with her family. She also loved to sing in church, as well as with a local country group, who called themselves the “No Name Band”. Virginia was a talented fashion sketch artist and enjoyed tending to her flowers, cats and Pete the parakeet. She is survived by her five children: “Jim”, “Drew” (wife, Marta), Brenda, Jennifer (husband Don) Sullivan and Nancy all of whom, along with some fabulous home health aides, cared for her until her passing.

Besides her children, Ms. Lyons is survived by her brother Marvin Stayton, his wife, Wanda, their daughters, Angela and Melanie; and by seven grand-children (Chanda, Sarah, Jeremy, Evan, Chelsea, Victoria, Kristen ) and three great grand-children (Chesney, Eros and Noah). She is also survived by several nephews and a bunch of adoring nieces.

Her funeral, viewing and service, are at 11 AM and Noon on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Berry Short Funeral Home in Milford, Delaware. The interment is at Milford Community Cemetery (formerly Odd Fellows) on Walnut Street. There will be a remembrance dinner afterwards at Milford Church of Christ, Rt 113.
