Obituary for Virden ‘Sonny’ R. Macklin

Georgetown—Virden ‘Sonny’ R. Macklin passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at his home in Georgetown, DE.

Sonny was born in Georgetown, DE, on September 19, 1935, to his parents W. Virden and Mildred (Rust) Macklin. He was a lifelong resident of Sussex County.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Sonny was employed by Nabisco Brand companies until his retirement and later employed with Proctor and Gamble and a realtor. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Georgetown, DE for over 50 years. Sonny was also a member of the Sussex Pines County Club and Mulligans Point. Most of all Sonny enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by his son, Michael V. Macklin; great grandson, Benjamin Macklin; brothers-in-laws, Francis ‘Hump’ Holleger and Ernest (Ernie) Peoples.

Sonny survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Madelyn (McIlvaine) Macklin; son Gregory ‘Greg’ Macklin (Cathy); daughter, Patti Seabolt (John); grandchildren, Adam Macklin (Katie), Jake Macklin (Jessica), Julie Rollins (Jordan), Cassidy VanPelt (David), Kristen Chalmers (Stephen); great grandchildren, Brennan Macklin, Brody Rollins, Elizabeth Macklin, Bryant VanPelt, Blake Rollins, Sonny Macklin, Mason Macklin, Hannah Chalmers, Victoria VanPelt, and; sisters, Helen Holleger and Jean Peoples.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 1:00pm at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 102 East Laurel Street, Georgetown, DE and a time of visitation will be held from 11:30am to 1:00pm where friends and family may call.

Flowers are accepted; however, the family welcomes memorial contributions in memory of Sonny to the Wesley United Methodist Church.
