Walter E. Stauffer “Emerson” Milton and Broadkill Beach Walter Emerson Stauffer,94, passed away suddenly at home Monday, August 30,2021. Born to Daniel W. and Florence Stauffer in Laurel, Delaware on September 10, 1926. He moved to Red Mill near Lewes at the age of 12. Attending Lewes High School, he played many instruments in the band. Emerson worked for All American Engineering Company in instrumentation in Georgetown, DE., and as an electrician for Bill Short and Milford Fertilizer Company in Milford. Emerson was an outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing in the Delaware Bay and birdwatching. He was an avid newspaper reader, gardener and could repair or improve anything in his workshop. Building a cottage in Broadkill Beach in 1955, Doris and Emerson enjoyed 62 summers there and knew all things Broadkill. Emerson was a former member of Broadkill Sportsman Club and enjoyed visits from family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Pearl Workman, Velma Davidson, and Norma Lee Truitt and Brother Lester Stauffer. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Doris A. Stauffer, and nieces, Lisa McAllister, and Jean Kelly. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 7,2021 at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 11:00 am. Burial will be in Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton. Masks optional while indoors.
