MILTON – William Henry Smith, a lifelong resident of Milton, well known to many as “Bill Henry”, passed away unexpectedly at home on Saturday, July 29, 2023.
William was born in Milford, De, son of the late Julian M. “Junie” and F. Jeanette (Mitchell) Smith.
He graduated in the Milton High School Class of 1967 and furthered his education graduating from Goldey-Beacom Junior College in 1969, of which he was very proud. He worked alongside his family in their farming operation, Smith Brothers Farms, and was owner and operator of Smith Landing Campground. He was an avid Phillies fan and enjoyed watching or listening to every game. Bill Henry was a simple man who loved Milton and whose life was centered on its people and community.
Bill volunteered with the Milton Fire Department, Station 85, where he was recently recognized with his 50 years’ service award. His service included Superintendent of Supplies, Chief Engineer, and Assistant Secretary.
In his 50 years, he rarely missed a Tuesday night meeting at the fire hall.
In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by an infant sister, and his companion Pat Huffman.
Bill is survived by three daughters, Tracy McLamb and husband Donald, Jennifer McKean and husband Michael, Katie Shockley and husband Scott; their mother, Donna Smith; five grandchildren, Hannah, Kelsie, Melanie, Thomas and Grayne; his canine companions, Labradors Lux and Maggie; as well as numerous cousins, extended family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, August 5, 2023 in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal Street, Milton, DE, where a time of visitation will begin at 10:00am. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial contributions to Milton Fire Department, 116 Front Street, Milton, DE 19968. All firefighters are welcome to attend the services. Apparatus to be provided by Milton Fire Dept.
